town about 60 miles northeast of new york city. the death toll at the sandy hook elementary school stands at 26, including 20 children, some of them kindergarteners. and the principal of the school was killed as well. the gunman, 20-year-old adam lanza, armed with two handguns, opened fire in the kindergarten classroom where his mother was a teacher. her body was found later at her home. after the shootings, the police say adam lanza took his own life at the school. jim axelrod tells us how it all unfolded. jim? >> reporter: well, scott, it was just before -- just after 9:00 this morning at the sandy hook elementary school, which is right down the road here, a kindergarten through fourth grade school, so early this kids were still delivering their attendance list from their classrooms to the main office. as we say, a little after 9:00, the gunman apparently walked into the school and started shooting. police got 911 calls and kids could hear screaming coming over the intercom. the school was quickly placed on lockdown. teachers locking doors, pulling shades, keeping kids away from

dolan the new york archbishop spoke at her funeral. while the memorial to the victims grow bigger each day, the investigation continues into what led to the rampage. on wednesday, investigators removed boxes from the home of shooter adam lanza as they searched for a motive. for survivors class resume after the holidays in monroe. the sandy hook building may never reopen. dan dayton attended the school as a child. >> i knew every part of that school. so it's been tarnished forever. >> reporter: school officials say the new school will be a fresh start for a community that's struggling to move on. police reveal that there were two bedrooms in the home where adam lanza shared with his mother and one of the bedrooms in the basement she kept her weapons in a locked box. he obviously got access to them. he also kept his computer games and hard drive there. police he destroyed the hard drive so they couldn't find traces of what he was thinking or doing in the hours before last friday's shooting. reporting live in newtown, connecticut, i'm randall pinkston, back to you. >> thank you. >>> peopl

maneuvers. in an open letter to the president today, eight big city mayors from new york to los angeles asked for an outright ban on assault weapons. >> it's clear that gun is not for the streets it's not for sports. it's really a gun of war. >> reporter: san francisco mayor ed lee and oakland mayor jean quan agree with the federal assault weapons ban that's already in place in california. the two cities just had their largest gun buy-back event taking 600 firearms off the streets. >> the reality is we can buy back hundreds but if we can't stop the flow into nevada and increasingly now for the internet and other sources, this is where we really need and that's why i think you see the mayors across the country trying to put pressure on the federal government. >> reporter: but will public sentiment last long enough to fight strong lobbying groups line the nra? san jose mayor chuck reed weighed in. >> i think people have a right to not necessarily use assault weapons anytime anywhere they want. and i think within the limits of the constitution, there are things we can do and we should. >>
